WS-27 Cooling Agent - No Odor, Strong Cooling Effect, Eliminates Menthol Taste

The cooling agent WS-27 (chemical name: N-ethyl-2,2-dipropylbutanamide) is one of the derivatives of menthol-based cooling agents. It is a new generation product of the WS series cooling agents. It is designed to provide a pure and long-lasting cooling sensation, while avoiding the irritating odor and burning sensation caused by traditional menthol.

The WS-27 has been improved to address the shortcomings of earlier coolants (such as menthol, WS-3, etc.), and it has the following notable features: 

  • Pure cooling sensation: Provides immediate and intense cooling sensation, mainly acting on the front part of the mouth and the tongue. It has no bitter taste, pungent taste, stinging sensation or numbness like menthol, and has almost no odor (no taste), thus not interfering with the flavor of the product itself. 

  • Cooling effect lasts long: The cooling effect lasts for a relatively long time (approximately 3 to 15 minutes), providing a continuous refreshing sensation. 

  • High-temperature resistance: It has excellent thermal stability and its cooling effect will not be affected even when heated at a temperature of up to 200°C. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for products that require high-temperature processes such as baking and pasteurization (such as baked goods). 

  • Good solubility: Compared to WS-23, WS-27 has better solubility and a smoother texture. It is easily soluble in alcohol-based solvents such as ethanol, but almost insoluble in water. 

  • Low onset dose: A typical dosage of 30-100 mg/kg (i.e. 0.003% - 0.01%) can achieve a significant cooling effect, depending on the specific application.


Main application fields 

The WS-27 is widely used in the food, cosmetics and beauty industries due to its mild and efficient properties. 

  • Oral care and food: toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum, candies, chocolate, dairy products, jelly, baked bread, beer and alcoholic beverages

  • Personal care and cosmetics: shampoo, body wash, shaving cream, sunscreen, skin care products (facial masks, creams), air freshener

  • Others: medicines (such as fever patches, cough syrups)


Usage Suggestions

  • Solubility: Although it is insoluble in water, it has good solubility in alcohol-based solvents (such as ethanol) and ester-based solvents. Research shows that its solubility in alcohol-based solvents significantly increases with the rise in temperature. 

  • Recommended dosage: The recommended dosage varies significantly across different products. For instance, it is typically 10 mg/kg in soft drinks and dairy products, while in chewing gum, the dosage can reach up to 1200 mg/kg. 

  • Compatibility: When combined with other cooling agents (such as WS-3, WS-23), it can produce a synergistic effect, resulting in a richer range of cooling sensations. It can also be compatible with various flavor essences to enhance the flavor.
